If I remove all cables and then power on, but leave the ext HDD disconnected the update will complete succesfully and my box will function correctly until the next failed update process. The update however will fail if the external HDD is plugged in, I have to disconnect the external HDD until the update has completed otherwise it will fail when the console shuts down and reboots i.e. The above cable pulling exercise will allow it power on. If there has been an update whilst the box is powered off, it will fail to boot up.
